Savoring Food—a Slimming Strategy?
The motherly advice to slow down and chew your food well is right on target. New research out of the University of Rhode Island shows that longer meal times and thorough chewing decrease the amount of food eaten and lead to greater satiation—the feeling of fullness and satisfaction after a meal.
In the first study to look at a combined approach to slower eating—taking smaller bites, pausing between bites, and chewing thoroughly—investigators compared how much food people ate and how satiated they felt after eating meals quickly and slowly.

Omega-3s and Phytosterols: A Promising Pair for Heart Disease Protection
Increasingly popular omega-3 fatty acids—found in sources like fish—and plant extracts known as phytosterols—which occur naturally in sources like vegetable oils, whole grains, nuts, and legumes—are known to have beneficial effects on fats (lipids) in the blood that affect heart health, such as cholesterol and triglycerides. Now a new study suggests that when taken in combination, they may have even more powerful effects.
Lowering LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and raising HDL (“good”) cholesterol are important steps toward reducing health risks. High total and LDL cholesterol and high triglycerides are associated with an increased cardiovascular disease risk. On the other hand, a high level of HDL cholesterol protects against cardiovascular disease. Lifestyle changes and medication can improve a person’s lipid profile and reduce risks. Researchers are finding that using phytosterols and omega-3 fatty acids may be another way to help lower cholesterol.

Vitamin D a Bone Booster for People with Digestive Problems
People with digestive diseases, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, are especially susceptible to osteoporosis and bone fractures, due in part to nutrient deficiencies caused by malabsorption and medication side effects. A new study found that people with good vitamin D status early in the course of their disease had higher bone density and a greater likelihood of increasing bone density over time.
