Bone is a dynamic tissue that is continuously broken down and restructured by osteoblasts the bone forming cells and remodelled by the osteoclasts, this fine balance of activity maintains a normal healthy bone structure. This delicate balance can be disrupted by illness, medication and nutrient deficient diets; whilstdiets high in protein, saturated fats, alcohol, saltand impaired digestive function can impact on the absorption of nutrients important for healthy bones. Those undertaking reduced levels of physical exercise or the less mobile and those without regular exposure to sunlight are at particular risk for reduced bone renewal and remodelling.

Reduced bone density once considered a problem for the older female is now shown to be a condition impacting on both males and females and occurring at a younger age than previously considered.

Due to demand we are now offering a formulation specifically tailored for those who wish to ensure they are providing adequate nutrients to maintain ahealthy bone mineral density.

Calcium is an important mineral in boneformation; studies showthe importance of calcium in the developing bones throughout childhood and teenage years assisting in achieving a peak bone mass essential for maintaining bone density as we age. Calcium levels remainan important consideration for those with a reduced intake of dietary calcium. Bone Support Formula provides Wholefood Calcium, a natural wholefood, organic multimineral seaweed product, harvested from Atlantic waters off Irelands Southwest coast. Wholefood calcium naturally contains a number of trace minerals.

Magnesium is important to the structure of bone with 55 - 60% of magnesium found in the bone; magnesium regulates the transport and metabolism of calcium. Magnesium has been found to play a key role in osteoporosis where reduced dietary intake of magnesium was found to disrupt bone and mineral metabolism in animals. Researchers have also foundsignificantly lower levels of magnesium in the red blood cells of post-menopausal women with osteoporosis.Magnesium is provided by the addition of the Wholefood Calciumwhich provides 6.25mg of magnesium, an additional 50mg of magnesium citrate is included to elevate the levels of magnesium per tablet.

Soy Isoflavones
Soy isoflavones are a flavonoid, the structure of which is believed to mimic the hormone oestradiol working as a hormonal balancer. Much of the research with soy isoflavones has centred on the times during and post menopause. A number of studies and trials have taken place; a meta-analysis of these has confirmed the benefits of isoflavones particularly for menopausal women, with a six month period considered as relevant for beneficial effects to the bone.

Vitamin K2
Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin that is an important co-factor to proteins which are essential for the bone building process. There are two naturally occurring forms of Vitamin K, K1 (phylloquinone), this is the form most commonly consumed in the diet and found in green leafy vegetables. Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) refers to a group of compounds some of which is synthesised by bacteria in the gut with additional compounds found in meat and fermented foods. The benefits for vitamin K to fracture healing has been known for a number of years, more recently vitamin k has been researched for its implications to the incidence of osteoporosis where low dietary intake of vitamin K showed a significant correlation with the incidence of hip fracture. Vitamin K status has been found to be an additional diagnostic tool with decreased levels of vitamin K found in patients with osteoporosis.

Vitamin D3
Vitamin D is essential for the uptake and distribution of calcium and promotion of bone mass, specific receptors for vitamin D have also been identified in human muscle tissue where studies have shown that elderly persons with higher vitamin D serum levels have increased muscle strength and a lower number of falls.
Supplemental vitamin D is available as D2(ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol), metabolism of these nutrients is undertaken differently and vitamin D3 is considered to offer increased bio-availability.
