Cytoplan Choline Bitartrate Powder - Choline is not one of the B-complex vitamins. However, like the B vitamins, it serves as a co-enzyme in metabolism. Choline is associated primarily with the utilisation of fats and cholesterol in the body. As a constituent of bile, it contributes to the initial emulsification of fats so that they can be properly digested and utilised.
Best Natural Sources
The richest source of choline is lecithin, but other rich dietary sources include egg yolk, liver, brewers yeast and wheat germ. Lecithin is used as a food additive. It acts as an emulsifier by bridging water and fat molecules, thereby aiding the proper digestion of fats. It also protects against oxidant damage, prevents fats from accumulating in the liver and facilitates the movement of fats into the cells. Choline is essential for the health of the liver and the kidneys and also of myelin sheaths (the principal component of nerve fibres). It plays an important role in the transmission of nerve impulses. Absorption and Storage Choline is absorbed in the upper part of the small intestine but must be phosphorylated before it can be used by the brain. Once in the form of phosphatidyl choline, it can pass the blood brain barrier. Phosphatidyl choline therefore can be utilised directly, without the need for conversion, which uses up energy.
There is no RDA for choline. The average diet has been estimated to contain 400 to 900 mg of choline per day.
