The mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus grows almost worldwide, principally on old tree stumps and trunks of deciduous trees. In the northern hemisphere it grows from mid October and is able to survive temperatures as low as -3 Celsius.
It is a tasty gastronomic mushroom.
The healing properties of Pleurotus ostreatus have been recognised in numerous very distinct cultures, quite independently of each other. Usage of Pleurotus ostreatus in Chines herbal medicine dates back to at least the Song dynasty (10th to 13th centuries AD)
